You may find the whole process of buying a new car a bit overwhelming especially if you are not sure which car to buy. Finding advice will not be the difficult part but the problem will actually be which advice can you trust? Even well meaning people offering advice could be giving you bad advice.

Just because a new car has been the ideal choice for someone that you know, it does not mean that it will be the best car that you can choose. It can be difficult but here are a few ideas about how to get advice you can trust about new cars.

- Our friends and family will often have plenty of advice about what cars to buy. Even though some of this advice will be good, a lot of it will actually mislead you. There will never be any intention to mislead you but the problem is that these people really don’t know enough to be offering you this advice.

It is probably a good idea to listen to this advice but don’t use it as a foundation for your decision.

- When it comes to finding information on new cars, you will probably notice that there are a lot of articles etc on the internet. The problem is that a lot of this information is inaccurate and in a lot of instances might involve a deliberate attempt to deceive you. With the internet, things can be posted by just about anyone and this can be a problem for those looking for correct information.

If you are looking online for information then stick to websites that have a good reputation but remember to still be cautious.

- If you get the hint that somebody is trying to sell you something then you can’t really trust their advice. It is better to get advice from experts who don’t stand to benefit from your decisions.

Searching for great cars, then Mitsubishi Cars are your ultimate choice for your dream vehicle

To drive abroad requires a valid driver’s licence. If you’ve a photo card licence you’ll also have to take the paper counterpart with you. Check that your auto insurance covers you for the countries you plan to drive in & that you have the original certificate to take with you. You must have your passport with you when driving. Drivers who are not European passport holders may need additional documents such as an international drivers licence to drive whilst in Europe.

When driving in Spain and some other countries you need an extra pair of glasses or contact lenses, if you need to wear them to drive with. In some countries, you need an international driving permit, which you can get from the post office in your country of origin.

It is a good idea to make sure that your breakdown cover covers you for all of the countries you will travel through, and to carry those documents with you in your car. If you are stopped and fined, in most European countries, you must pay the fine on the spot in cash or pay a larger fine, so it is wise to carry some cash. Some police officers are sympathetic and will allow you to drive to a local cash-point, but not all.

Carry your vehicle’s MOT or test certificate, a credit card, an insurance green card, travel insurance documents and your EHIC health card or travel insurance with you when driving. Write out a list of emergency contact numbers. That way if your cell phone, passport or credit cards are lost or stolen you will be able to get them cancelled and/or replaced.

You will also need an extra set of lights, two warning triangles, high VIS jackets for each person in the car, a first aid kit, spare fuses, a fire extinguisher, a GB or country of origin sticker, headlamp converters, a spare tyre & equipment to change tyres & in some countries, a towrope. This list isn’t exhaustive, so look up the requirements for each country that you plan to drive through.

There are so many people who are trying to decide whether they should go for a new car or stick to buying an old one. Because so many of us are trying to watch the pennies these days, this is a decision that faces a lot of people.

The decision on whether to go for new or old is not as easy as it once was because the price of used cars has increased so much in line with demand. And another problem with used cars is the fact that there seems to be much less choice because of the increased demand. So there really is the dilemma of old car or new car.

The biggest advantage of going for used cars is that they are much cheaper than new cars even though the price has risen lately. A second-car that is only a year old can be up to 50% less than what you would pay for a new car. So financially it really can make more sense to go for a second hand car rather than a brand new one. There are great deals still out there although it might take a bit of hard work on your part to find them.

There are other people who think that it is much better to go for a new car instead. At the end of the day the prices of used cars nowadays are much more expensive than they once were and it can be difficult to find a suitable car. With a new car you have no worries about buying a lemon and when you drive it you are going to feel proud as punch.

You may feel it is worth paying a bit extra for a brand new car just for the feeling that you get when you drive it. You only live once so why waste time on used cars that could turn out to be more trouble than they’re worth.

If you are on the hunt for great servicing deals then Nissan Aftersales has it all.

Once your car is over 3 years old, you have to start taking it for an MOT every year. It is wise to check some of your cars systems prior to taking it for its MOT. That way your car is more likely to pass first time. If your car fails you have only10 days to get it repaired and re-tested, but you will have to pay for another MOT.

Admittedly, it costs half the price of the first MOT, but it is still an expensive price to pay for not taking a few minutes to look over your car and find any obvious faults.

Do not take a dirty car to an MOT. Your lights have to be clean to pass, and the tester has to be able to clearly see everything underneath the car. Clear out your boot too, so that the tester can check the spare tyre.

Brake issues are ranked as a major reason for cars failing their MOTs. If your brakes feel unresponsive or they feel spongy when you press the brake pedal down get them checked by a mechanic. Test your handbrake, if you have to pull it up a long way before it works you may have to get the cable changed.

Check your steering and shock absorbers. To test the shock absorber, press down each corner of the car and make sure the corner bounces straight back up. Each corner should respond the same. Test your steering in an empty car park, by setting your wheels dead straight and pulling away. After a few yards take both hands off the steering wheel. If the car pulls to either side, your steering needs checking.

Make sure that there are no chips on the windscreen and that the wipers are working. Top the washer system up with screen wash prior to the MOT. Test the horn and all lights including the number plate light. Worn or damaged tyres or seatbelts also need to be identified and replaced.

Check your exhaust with the help of a friend. Get your friend to hold a thick cloth over the end of the exhaust. Once you have put your handbrake on and made sure the car is in neutral start the engine. If it stalls immediately your exhaust is fine, if not you may have a hole in your exhaust.

If your car is billowing dark or white smoke find out why and get it fixed. A car with this issue will usually fail the emissions section of the MOT.

If you are buying your new car from a dealer, it is easiest for you to trade your car in. However, this is not always the best from a financial point of view, you are likely to lose money if you trade your car in. First, find out from the dealer what the price of your new car will be with and without trading your old car in. Work out what your old car is worth if sold privately and from there calculate how much money you could be lose if you trade your car in. The majority of dealers are happy to re-negotiate the price rather than lose a sale.

Bear in mind that selling a car privately can be a lot of hassle and take quite a long time. Also if you let the dealer take your car it becomes their responsibility. This means that if there are any problems with your old car the dealer has to sort them out with the new owner. Avoiding all that potential hassle is actually worth quite a bit of money.

In most cases if you trade your car in, you will lose some money. If you really do not want to do this speak to your dealer about selling your old car on your behalf. Most will do so, but will take a commission for handling the sale for you.

If your car is so old that it is of little value consider giving it away to a charity, a family member or a friend. There are also a few re-cycling websites out there that take old cars for free. To protect yourself from being liable for any fines relating to your old car make sure that you get documentary proof of the change of ownership even if no money changes hands. Notify the DVLA of the change of ownership. If you are a reasonable mechanic you can break your old car into parts and sell the parts via the local paper or eBay. Depending on its age and the quality of the parts you can sometimes get more for the car than if you sold it whole.

Lastly, consider scrapping your car, many firms will do it for free. However, remember that they must be on the Environment Agencies list of Authorised Treatment Facilities. Make sure you get the proper paperwork to avoid costs and liability for fines relating to the car not being scrapped properly.
